Join the League of Women Voters of the Greater Grand Rapids Area on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:00 pm for the third event in our Voices on Vital Topics speaker series. This month we are pleased to host Chris VanEyl, the Grand Rapids Group Lead for Moms Demand Action. In addition to her role with Moms Demand Action, Chris is also an active member of the LWVGGRA.
Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. The organization has chapters nationwide and is currently 10 million members strong. Membership numbers always swell when there is a mass shooting (which we have seen all too frequently), but their work involves a multitude of education on topics such as safe storage, suicide prevention, and domestic violence. They also advocate for common-sense gun laws and promote candidates who support gun sense legislation.
For the first time in decades, we have a gun-sense trifecta in Michigan with both chambers of the legislature and the Governor’s office, so there has already been movement in getting some bills introduced. During our event on March 22, Chris will provide an update on these bills, and will offer an overview of next steps.
Since 1990, LWV has held a national position on gun policy. You can review the LWV gun policy here. In light of recent events not only nationwide, but here locally with the recent event on the campus of Michigan State University, we feel this is an important and timely topic for our Voices on Vital Topics series.
